Scalar contradictions generated by the tourism industry in Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico: challenges for sustainability

Abstract
The objective of this article is to identify the contradictions inherent to the development of the tourism industry in Cozumel from the paradigm of sustainability. The method of analysis was based on dialectical materialism starting from the law of unity and struggle of opposites. The data collection instrument chosen was the semi-structured interview since it allowed to investigate the experiences, experiences and meanings of the informants. Likewise, the application of this instrument allowed the identification of 14 dialectical units in the responses of the 34 informants interviewed, coming from the 7 types of social actors involved in the phenomenon addressed, which were identified during field observation. To facilitate the analysis of the data, ATLAS.ti was used. The results showed 5 contradictions inherent to the phenomenon studied: 1) Economic contradictions, 2) Social contradictions, 3) Infrastructural contradictions, 4) Territorial contradictions and 5) Environmental contradictions. It is concluded that it is necessary to overcome capitalist contradictions and radically transform the current economic and social model of the tourism industry in Cozumel, prioritizing social and environmental justice and empowering the local community over profit maximization to achieve a sustainable approach in said locality.
