Chiapanecas moving collectively towards a life free from violence: challenges and lessons learned

Abstract
The objective of this article is to analyze through the notions of the exercise of power the construction of a women's collective project to build economic independence in order to live a life free of violence in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas during the second year of the COVID pandemic. The method used was ethnography of the organizational process, through participant observation and interviews. The results allow us to analyze the process in terms of temporality, the integration of new members, the formation of alliances, the avoidance of conflict and conflict resolution, where the power strategies employed are identified: trying to have an advantage over the other; the maintenance of privileges; the act of communicating and disciplinary knowledge and its intersection with systems of oppression such as class and race. In the conclusions, I start from the fact that power relations are established in all human interaction and I propose a reflection based on learning from experience in the implementation of collective projects. Therefore, I emphasize the importance of working collectively to question the exercises of power and the resolution of conflicts in a peaceful manner.
